PAPAGIANNIS PANAGIOTIS

Medical Radiation Physicist, Professor

Panagiotis Papagiannis is a Medical Radiation Physicist, Medical Physics Expert and Radiation Protection Expert in medical and non-medical exposures, serving as Professor of the Medical Physics Laboratory of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).

His educational activity focuses on Medical Physics, Radiation Protection, Dosimetry, and Physics of the Human Body. It includes participation in undergraduate courses in three schools of the NKUA, course responsibility within the framework of three postgraduate programs of the NKUA, responsibility of the course of Medical Physics in the Medical Degree English Program in the Medical School of the NKUA, and teaching in international ESTRO Teaching Courses, as well as the supervision of more than 30 undergraduate, 10 postgraduate and 18 doctoral dissertations (7 as main supervisor),  as well as the educational/research visit of 6 foreign MSc/PhD students.

His research interests include quality control of image-guided radiotherapy with emphasis on brachytherapy, computational and experimental dosimetry, and translational research to evaluate the benefit of incorporating new scientific elements into clinical practice.

His published work includes more than 85 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (>2200 citations, h-Index=31, source: Scopus), the translation co-editing  of 3 academic physics textbooks, and the writing of 3 chapters in Greek medical physics textbooks, and 3 chapters in international textbooks on Brachytherapy.

He participates, or has participated, in international committees and working groups of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO National Societies Committee, Guidelines Committee,  BRAchytherapy  PHYsics Quality Assurance System) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM Working Group on Brachytherapy Dosimetry, Model Based Dose Calculation Algorithms Working Group).

He has also served as a reviewer in 13 journals (see Peer Review at Orchid), reviewer of research proposals for the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, and the Dutch Cancer Institute (KWF KANKER BESTRIJDING), and member of the Scientific Committee of ESTRO conferences.

He has been a member of the research team in 11 research projects. He has also served as Coordinator/Scientific Coordinator of 8 research projects with a total funding (managed through the Special Account for Research Grants of the NKUA) of more than 500 thousand euro, most of which was used to support young researchers and procure research equipment.
