The Medical Physics Laboratory (MPL) was established in 1979, based on Presidential Decree 35 (Government Gazette 10/24-1-1979). The MPL was the first medical physics laboratory established in a Greek academic medical school. Corresponding laboratories were later established in all other medical schools of the Greek universities.
In the initial scope of the establishment of the MPL it was stated that:
"having as its content the teaching of the principles of physics for studying the physiological functions of the human body, the techniques of physics employed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in medicine, the comparison of such techniques with other medical techniques, and the documentation of the techniques employed in medical instrumentation".
Since June 2018 the Director of the MPL is Prof. P. Karaiskos.
